What are the benefits of Feldenkrais Method or Somatic Movement in general?

Somatic Movement has something for everyone. Here are some of the benefits:

Improved body awareness, rehabilitation from injury/surgery, relief of muscular tension and body pain, deep relaxation, improved sleep, improved thinking/focus/ability to stay present, increased feeling of ease, pleasure, personal empowerment and overall wellbeing, 

 

What is Awareness Through Movement?

Awareness Through Movement® lessons are part of the Feldenkrais Method.

Students are guided through a sequence of gentle movements, done slowly in a comfortable range of motion. With uniquely focused attention, students can become aware of unexpected and interesting connections within and between the movements. Continued practice can improve  mobility, flexibility, balance, quality, ease and range of movement while eliminating  unnecessary muscular strain, improve overall wellbeing and create a unique inner stillness. Students are often amazed at the quick and clear changes that occur through the neuromuscular repatterning (neuroplasticity) demonstrated in this practice.

These lessons tie directly into functional movements of daily life, such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving one’s posture in sitting or standing.

What is Feldenkrais? How is it different from Yoga?

Feldenkrais Method falls under the umbrella of  “somatic movement” because it is a practice that is about improving the way you sense and feel yourself rather than learning a technique.

Feldenkrais Method uses group classes called Awareness Through Movement and private hands-on bodywork called Functional Integration as tools for “embodied learning.”

This means unlike traditional learning in which you are told what is right and wrong and are evaluated, with embodied learning you learn from your own experience. It’s a gradual process toward self-knowing – not an immediate outcome.

What clothes do I need to wear? Do I need a yoga mat?

Wear anything comfortable that you can move in.  Awareness Through Movement classes are done either laying on the floor, sitting in a chair or standing. All you ever really need is some space on the floor! The Retreat on The Hill studio is equipped with all of the props necessary for your comfort and enjoyment.

What happens in a private session Online?

Learning online in the comfort of your own home is a fantastic way to get personal support. Whether your intention is to relieve pain, improve performance or just feel more at ease and comfortable in your own skin –  I will guide you in a series of customized movements to get you on a clear, comfortable, fun pathway to improvement.
